Wedding thank you card messages

Once the confetti has settled on your big day, you might be ready to draw a line under all of the wedding admin, but you’re still not quite ready to skip off into newly-wedded bliss. No, it’s time to grab a pen and your invite list – ‘cos you’ve got some wedding thank you cards to write.

Of course, if you also still need to sort out thank you cards for your bridesmaids, we can help with that too – and it pretty much goes without saying that if you want some thoughtfully unique wedding cards or thank you cards, you’ve come to the right people.

Just have a little sneak peek at a few of the fabulous original thank you card designs that our creators have come up with below.

How to write a wedding thank you card

Alright, here are the basics: say thank you for the gift, add a note about how you’re going to use it, mention any wedding memories if they were in attendance, say thanks again, and you’re done. Couldn’t be simpler. Need a bit more detail, though? We gotcha. Here’s a foolproof guide:

Make sure you’re thanking the right people

First things first, make a list of everyone you need to thank, and write down the gift they gave you. Start with your wedding invites list and work back to make sure no one is accidentally snubbed, then go back through your cards and presents to make sure everyone’s accounted for.

You’ll need to make sure you’ve got the right names, too – it’s worth checking cards to see who they’re addressed from to make sure you’re thanking the right people.

Thank them for attending

When you’re actually writing your wedding thank you cards, add a note about them coming to the wedding, and how much you enjoyed their company.

Examples:

  • Thank you so much for sharing our special day with us!
  • We had a blast partying with you at our wedding
  • We loved every second of our wedding, especially because we got to share it with you
  • We’re so grateful you came to see us get married and lit up the dance floor!

If they didn’t attend the wedding

It can be hard to find the right wedding thank you card wording for someone who didn’t attend the big day itself, but here are a few ideas to explain that they were missed if they couldn’t make it – the key is to be heartfelt, honest, and not overthink it too much.

  • You were much missed on the big day
  • We’re so sorry you couldn’t make it on the day
  • We felt the love even though you couldn’t be there
  • We missed you tons, but we know you’d have been there if you could

Thank them for their gift

Whether you had a registry or cash gifts, the next step is to simply say ‘thank you for the gift’ – and it’s a good idea to be specific with this, so that they feel like you’ve really appreciated the present. It might feel a bit self-serving if you chose your registry gifts – like wow, don’t we have excellent taste? – but we guarantee people won’t think about it that much.

Add a personal touch

Explain how you plan on using their gift – people will enjoy hearing about how you plan to use their gift, and that it has a place in your married life together.

For example, instead of ‘Thanks for the gift!’ say ‘Thank you so much for the lovely wine glasses – we’ll have to have you round to share a bottle’, or ‘We absolutely love the photo frame you gave us – once we get our wedding photos back, it will go on pride of place on our mantelpiece.’

Sign off

Then, all that’s left to do is to say ‘thank you again!’ and sign off – and, bonus, this might be the first time you’ve signed your married names (if you’re changing names, that is) which is a nice novelty, no?

Wedding thank you wording if you don’t know them very well

Whether it’s distant family or your family’s invited guests (and they were nice enough to send a present) it can be tough to know what to say in a wedding card to someone you just don’t know very well. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Thank you for your kindness and generosity – you’ve helped to make our big day even more special!
  2. We’re so grateful for your kindness – thank you for sharing this exciting time in our lives.

What to say if you didn’t love the gift

If you go off-registry, it’s always a risk – but if your guests got you a present you’re not enamoured with, here’s an idea of what to say. You don’t have to lie about using it if you’re not planning on it, but they went to the effort of getting you a gift, so it’s always better to say thank you.

  1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift, and for showing us such kindness.
  2. It was really kind of you to think of us during this special time – thank you so much.
  3. We’re grateful for your generous gift, and for your care and thoughtfulness.
  4. Thank you so much for your kind gift and your support as we start the new chapter of our lives.
