When to announce that you’re pregnant

Of course, you can announce your pregnancy whenever you want to – it’s your body, your baby, and your life! – but many parents choose to wait a little while before they announce. It’s entirely your choice; you might want to wait until the first ultrasound, or until you and your partner know the baby’s sex. Here are a few stages where you might want to plan in your pregnancy announcement:

  • The end of the first trimester: The first trimester is the first 12 weeks of the pregnancy. Some parents wait until this point for a pregnancy announcement, because unfortunately the risk of miscarriage can be higher before this point.
  • The first ultrasound: In the UK, you’ll usually have two scans: one between 11-14 weeks, and one at 18-21 weeks. The first ultrasound (which coincides with the end of your first trimester) is also when you’ll have your first little photo of your baby from the scan, which is a lovely detail to include in your baby announcement!
  • The second ultrasound: You might want to wait until your second ultrasound, which is a bit more detailed and checks on your baby’s physical development, to make your happy news public.
  • When you know the baby’s sex: You can usually find out the sex of your baby at your second scan, though you’ll need to check with your midwife or sonographer to make sure that this is something they can do. If you’re planning a big reveal, then make sure you’ve read our guide to planning a gender reveal party, too!

Okay, they’re fur babies, not actual babies, but our four-legged friends are a huge part of our lives and our families – so having your pets involved in the announcement is a really sweet way to share your news.

Have your dog pose alongside your scan photo or sign, or (doggie temperament willing) have them cuddle up in a crib or bassinet!

  • Guard dog duty starting in [x] months…
  • [pet name] is going to be a big brother/sister

Nothing says summer like the beach – so if you’re announcing a pregnancy during summer, here are some sweet ideas for how to share your news.

  • Write your little one’s due date in the sand and take a photo

  • Get a custom t-shirt or a sign saying ‘Beach bump’ and pose for a photo
