Long time, no see! We’re back with another behind-the-scenes look at a Creator’s workspace. This time we’ve got an access all areas look at 2024’s Valentine’s Day best seller, The Cake Thief.

Tell us about your studio
I’m so lucky to have the space I’m in now, and grateful that my partner, Dan, has allowed me to take over as much of the house as I have!!
Our spare bedroom has become my ‘studio’ and I’m slowly creeping into the living room, much to Dan’s despair! I finally took the plunge and ordered myself a printer, thinking it would be much smaller and comfortably fit on my desktop… ha! Let’s just say it’s currently on a pallet in the middle of our living room and at 80kg, I think that’s probably where it’s going to stay.
My absolute favourite part of my studio though is my sit/stand desk – I love the option of being able to stand when I need to pack orders or sit when I’m doing admin.
How often are you in your studio?
Monday – Friday! I’m so lucky to to be able to work for myself full-time. It’s something I’d always dreamed of and I still have to pinch myself that it’s a reality.

What do you keep in your work space for inspiration?
Funnily enough, I think I’m more inspired when I’m not sat at my desk! I find a lot of my ideas come when I’m driving or waiting for the kettle to boil! So I’m trying to unplug my brain a bit more to allow the creativity to spark. My new favourite thing is going for a walk before I start work.
What are you working on right now?
My Mum calls me a ‘last minute Lucy’ so I’ve still got a few Mother’s Day designs I want to finalise and upload!! I always promise myself I’ll be more organised next year but if a topical design idea pops up, then the to-do list goes out the window!
How do you stay on top of the topical content - like with the Jurgen Klopp best selling card?
By spending way too much time on my phone! It’s difficult because I’d love to spend less time on my phone but I get a lot of ideas from social media.
Also just by plugging away and constantly putting designs out, you have to design a lot of ‘frogs’ to find a ‘prince’ if you know what I mean! A lot of the cards I design don’t become best sellers.
That being said, if you design a card which didn’t work for one occasion, don’t be afraid to update the design for a different occasion! I can remember I designed a card for Father’s Day design which sold a grand total of… one. I rejigged it for Christmas and it became my bestseller for that year. You never know!

What's the busiest occasion for you that you design for?
It has to be Valentine’s Day although I can be busy for Christmas and Father’s Day too. It really depends if I’ve been on the ball and have a design which resonates!

What's next for The Cake Thief?
More greetings cards!! I’ve got so many more ideas to come (as you can tell from my post it note wall!) so to finally get some of those finished and out into the world would be great! I’d love to broaden my range into other special occasions too.
I can’t wait to see what the future with thortful brings – I wouldn’t have my small business without them! Collaborating with the team over the years is the reason I’ve been able to develop and grow The Cake Thief. As long as thortful will have me, the future for The Cake Thief is bright (and now orange!).
We can’t wait to see what’s next for The Cake Thief! If you’d like to be featured in the next “Into the workspace with…” blog, do get in touch. Email us at [email protected]
See you next time.
