5 Gold Things (To Learn from Christmas 2021)

Hello creators! Our Christmas deadline is fast approaching (Sunday 9th October, so you know), which means it’s time to submit your festive designs. We thought we’d put together some tips, based on how things went last year.

1. Don't underestimate Traditional designs

We know what you’re thinking: thortful? Traditional cards? With our reputation?! You’d be surprised! We’ve seen that these cards are really in demand from us at this time of year. So if beautiful illustrations are your thing, now is your time to shine. Side note: these less specifically targeted designs are perfect for our A6 card packs.

2. Trends are your friends

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the topical designs our customers know and love. Of course, lateral flow jokes are now a thing of the past, so have a think about what Christmas 2022’s hot topics will be. It’s worth noting that this is our most saturated category, i.e the most competitive, so make sure your design is original and thoughtfully created.

3. Play the long game with timeless concepts

A way to future-proof your designs is to come up with ideas that aren’t time-sensitive, or trend-related. We find that cheeky, relatable, observational humour work well, as seen in the examples below. We’ve also seen a rise in sweet and sentimental designs too. And the best thing about not relying on trends? Your designs can continue to be a hit year after year.

4. Don't forget Photo Cards

We may not be known for our personalised designs, but we do see an increased interest in them around Christmas time. A while back we put together a blog post to explain how you can upload your very own templates, you can read this here

5. Christmas is a time for family

Thortful cards are high-impact, special cards for special people, as opposed to the cheaper card packs used to send to your entire Christmas list. So it’s no surprise that last year our most bought categories were recipient-focused:

  • Boyfriend
  • Mum
  • Parents
  • For Her
  • For Him

We hope this helps you get the most out of Christmas this year. In case you missed it, we’ve also put together a mood board to help get you inspired. Upload your Christmas designs here.

Merry Christmas, one and all! (Too early? Sorry. We’ll go back to defrosting Bublé).
