What is Galentine\u2019s Day?<\/h2>\n

Galentine\u2019s Day is celebrated on the 13th of February, and it\u2019s a day to appreciate your best mate, sister, mum, or any woman in your life for that matter. Rather than celebrating a significant other, Galentine\u2019s Day is all about celebrating that unique love that only friends can have. The kind of love that means you can chat about anything and everything until the early hours of the morning, or be that ever-present shoulder for someone to cry on after a massive heartbreak. It doesn\u2019t matter if you have an army of girlfriends or a small squad, it\u2019s about enjoying time with each other and celebrating the blessing that is female friendship.<\/p>\n

Where does Galentine\u2019s Day come from?<\/h2>\n

We\u2019re used to holidays being adapted from old religious holidays or ancient traditions \u2013 but Galentine\u2019s Day is a little bit different, because it was invented by\u2026 a fictional character. That\u2019s right \u2013 Galentine\u2019s Day was invented by Leslie Knope from\u00a0Parks and Recreation.<\/p>\n

Parks and Recreation (which is well worth a watch) is a sitcom about the Parks Department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana, USA. The second season\u2019s 16th\u00a0episode was called \u2018Galentine\u2019s Day\u2019 and aired \u2013 appropriately \u2013 on the week of Valentine\u2019s Day, February 11th\u00a02010. In the episode, the sweet and earnest lead character, Leslie Knope, throws her annual \u2018Galentine\u2019s Day\u2019 brunch party for her female friends. In her own words:<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the episode aired, Galentine\u2019s Day has transcended the airwaves to become a bona fide social media phenomenon, all about \u2013 as Leslie said \u2013 ladies celebrating ladies.<\/p>\n

Is Galentine\u2019s Day just for ladies?<\/h2>\n

While Galentine\u2019s Day is technically reserved as a day of empowerment for women everywhere, it\u2019s quickly become an occasion celebrated by everyone.
