Why it\u2019s important to care for your pets on Bonfire Night<\/h2>\n

Whilst a lot of us look forward to gazing at the night sky to spot some fireworks, Bonfire Night isn\u2019t always as enjoyable for our precious pets.\u00a0Many animals including dogs, rabbits, and cats are scared of fireworks and find all the loud noises and flashes distressing. Of course, we can\u2019t truly understand what they\u2019re experiencing, but we do know that it triggers their fight-or-flight response.<\/p>\n

So, if you\u2019re wondering how to calm dogs during fireworks, or are looking for ways to keep your new kitten comfortable and happy this Bonfire Night, dive into our safety tips below…<\/p>\n

Pet safety tips for Bonfire Night<\/h2>\n

No matter if it\u2019s their first Bonfire Night or their fifth, it\u2019s never easy seeing your family pet scared and afraid. But there are some ways you can try making the night just that little bit easier for them.<\/p>\n

Stay warm and cosy inside<\/h3>\n

Wondering how to calm dogs on Bonfire Night? Well, it probably goes without saying, but your best bet in keeping your pet calm is by bringing them inside. If you\u2019ve got a dog then taking them for a long walk earlier in the day whilst it\u2019s still bright and sunny (and firework-free) is wise, plus it might even help tire them out later on too.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve got any outdoor pets, you can partly cover their pen or cage with a blanket or throw to keep things soundproofed and block out all the flashing lights. Alternatively, if you feel it\u2019s best and you have enough space then you can bring them inside (although you might have to do this before Bonfire Night itself so that they can get used to it).<\/p>\n

Create a safe space<\/h3>\n

Pick the room that your pet feels most comfortable in, (this might be the living room, kitchen or maybe even a particular bedroom) then make this the ultimate safe haven for them. We\u2019re talking about their favourite treats, comfiest of beds, and toys galore.<\/p>\n

For cats, you\u2019ll probably want to make sure they\u2019ve got somewhere they can run and hide if necessary as well. And for smaller animals, it\u2019s a good idea to give them extra bedding which they can use to burrow into to feel safe.<\/p>\n

Soundproof your house<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re curious about how to help dogs with fireworks, soundproofing your house is one of the best things you can do. You\u2019ll need to close all the windows and curtains as well as shutting the doors so that the loud crashes and bangs aren\u2019t quite as intense.<\/p>\n

You could even put on some relaxing music to drown out the noises outside further. A quick search online will return all sorts of pet music for fireworks videos, there are even 10-hour-long compilations of music to calm dogs on YouTube that will last through the entire night! And how about simply switching on the radio for dogs on bonfire night?<\/p>\n

Keep them distracted<\/h3>\n

When we get anxious, we tend to try and distract ourselves, and the same can go for our pets too. Try playing with them using their favourite toys (the squeakier the better we say), you could even use the time to try teach them a new trick if they\u2019re up for it. Or if they\u2019re not in the most playful mood, you can give them a good ol\u2019 snuggle on the sofa.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s worth bearing in mind that if they\u2019re not in the mood for company and a bit too nervous, then you can just stay close by for comfort and let them do their own thing.<\/p>\n

Stay calm and relaxed<\/h3>\n

While this might be difficult if you\u2019re feeling anxious about your pet, staying calm and collected will help reassure them that there\u2019s nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n

You should try act as normal as possible, as a continued sense of routine can help your pet stay calm and collected. So, simply put your pet-safe precautions in place this Bonfire Night, then go about your evening as usual!<\/p>\n

Get chatting with others<\/h3>\n

Next time you bump into your neighbour, why not check in on their plans for Bonfire Night? This way you\u2019ll know whether you might need to take any extra precautions if there is going to be some noise coming from next door. It\u2019s also worth checking if there might be any local displays or other events going on around the time too.<\/p>\n

Another option could be looking into calming collars or pheromone diffusers that release a relaxing scent only your pets can detect thanks to their handy dandy heightened sense of smell.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re super worried and know your pet really doesn\u2019t do well on Bonfire Night, then you might want to consider speaking to your vet and seeing whether they\u2019ve got any other advice or treatments that might help.<\/p>\n
